Contributed by artist Jorge Molina. It’s been four years since Canadian artist Jorge Molina conceived of The 416 Project, installing 416 unique canvases throughout the many neighbourhoods of Toronto, including Cabbagetown. The genesis of the project was to capture objects, fixtures and surroundings that we see every day but to most are just visual noise. Jorge wanted to highlight that there is beauty even in this urban, utilitarian environment and show people that art is everywhere.
All 416 original paintings were quickly claimed. Jorge still continues to receive commissions to recreate the canvases from his city-wide installation, and in the last few months these requests have started to increase. “I think the fact everyone’s been physically distancing and sticking close to home has heightened people’s appreciation for their neighbourhood,” said Jorge. “Each community is unique and is part of what makes Toronto so special.” To learn more and see all the neighbourhoods of The 416 Project, go to www.the416project.com
