Contributed by Maryam Hatam @historicbuildingstoronto – William Lumbers House: This Second Empire style house (288 Carlton Street) was completed in 1881 for William Lumbers. Mr. Lumbers had a military career before becoming a dairy farmer in 1842. His dairy business was a success and supplied nearly all of Toronto with dairy products. In 1881, Mr. Lumbers opened the Lumbers Botanical Recipes, a firm selling natural medicines. William Lumbers and his wife had 10 children. Their eldest son, John went on to become a successful wholesale and retail merchant, operating his business at 145-147 Adelaide Street East.
