Contributed by Momentum Montessori. As many of us continue to work from home, there is a percentage of the population who have physically returned to work. Despite many uncertainties of how businesses will operate with such strict and in-depth operating criteria, we have managed to alleviate that fear and instead use it to deliver teachable opportunities for our students, staff and workplace.
Given the unique circumstances of our return, our educational staff have had to use their creativeness to alter their classroom layouts and teaching methods. Desks and tables now have a tape divider and only allow
for 2 children per table. What was once a very open concept classroom has now turned into clearly divided workstations and play areas. Where singing and dancing were once openly encouraged, we have now introduced a yoga/meditation practice in the classroom. Although the recent pandemic has been a hard time for us all, we have chosen to focus on the positives and create teachable moments for our students through interactive lessons. One such moment occurred in our Kindergarten program. Our teacher, April, states “ We can teach our students to help prevent the spread of the virus by washing our hands. I incorporated this as a lesson by using pepper, to represent the germs, water and soap. Students added a tiny amount of soap on their finger and when they touched the pepper-filled water the “germs” dispersed, demonstrating what happens to germs after we wash our hands.”
Our main goal at the end of each day is always the health, safety and well-being of our staff, students and families. We at Momentum Montessori strive to ensure everyone is well looked after and that no matter the circumstances, our students are provided with an environment they can thrive in. Going back to work and continuing our task of supporting these young minds has been a daunting task; but with the support of fellow staff, parents, and the greater community we have seen our centre thrive. There is something to be said about taking an uncertain circumstance and turning it into a positive experience. Momentum Montessori continues to demonstrate its undeniable ability to adapt to change and we look forward to continuing our journey throughout these unpredictable times.
