Featured artist contributed by John Desouza. Roksolyana resides in Toronto, Canada with her husband and daughter. Since graduating from the Ontario College of Art in 1997, he has participated in numerous exhibitions in the US and Canada. Most recently two solo shows in Toronto.
Roksolyana’s artwork uniquely builds from abstract geometric form sculpting towards the emotional connections she makes with her subjects. She often employs a vibrant palette to aid in capturing and depicting emotional depth. The result is an original blend of abstraction and emotional realism.
Her first love is portraiture, in the grand tradition of Rembrandt, Velasquez and Goya. In her work you will find an intimate uncovering of the moments spent with her subjects in the midst of lives lived in both sorrow and joy. In her nudes she is adept at capturing human form in all its fleshy volumes and muscular strengths. The study and knowledge of geometric form and depth can also be seen in her still-lifes, which, like Cezanne, are more akin to landscapes than the simple study of objects on a table. Family and Ukrainian traditions are also common themes in a portion of Roksolyana’s work, where the artist examines motherhood and historical cultural continuity with her father and grandfather.
