The Yonge Street Mission’s Food Bank helps over 2,500 people a month and currently the shelves are near empty. The Food Bank is a lifeline of support to people living with poverty: struggling families, the working poor and unemployed, people on disabilities and seniors on fixed incomes.
These community members are dependent for regular meals and struggle with food insecurity.
Low income community members come to the Yonge Street Mission (YSM) because of a lack of good job opportunities, low rates of social assistance, high housing costs and rising food prices. YSM helps community members with housing and employment assistance, addictions, education and health counseling.
The greatest needs are non-perishable food donations such as canned soup, tuna, fruits and vegetables, and dried pasta and rice and cereals. Other much appreciated items include powered milk, fruit juice, and soap, toothpaste and shampoo.
Food donations may be directly delivered to the Christian Community Centre 270 Gerrard Street East (by Parliament Street). Financial donations to YSM’s Food Bank can be made online at www.ysm.ca/give.
