In 2019, staff from the Rooming House Project applied for the Pollinator Grant with help from local tenants who were interested in the project. Together staff and clients completed the application, which included creating a pollinator garden at three of Dixon Hall’s rooming houses and one Dixon Hall office. After a suspenseful waiting period, we were awarded the grant – and were beyond excited to be a part of the project.
The pandemic has delayed some aspects of the program, but this week a few staff members and tenants were able to safely come together to plant some shrubs donated by the city. Tenants helped determine the layout, dig holes, and plant the new greenery, giving the front lawns of the rooming houses a fresh new look.
As fall fades, and the colder months approach, DH staff and clients hope to get some seeds and do some last-minute planting in preparation for new growth next spring – fingers crossed!
