Toronto Community Housing, The Daniels Corporation, MLSE Foundation and representatives from the City of Toronto joined with Regent Park residents on May 14 to celebrate the launch of Phase Three of the Regent Park Revitalization.
Also on hand were students from Nelson Mandela Park Public School, who unveiled the design for a key highlight of Phase Three: the new 2.8-acre (1.1-hectare) Regent Park Athletic Grounds. These athletic facilities will be built with primary funding support from MLSE Foundation and the City, along with support from The Daniels Corporation.
The students, who had participated in the consultations to design the athletic grounds, also presented artwork they had created illustrating what they hope to do in the new space.
At the unveiling, Toronto Community Housing’s interim President/CEO and Chief Development Officer Greg Spearn announced that the construction of rental buildings will be accelerated to deliver 900 replacement homes within four years, starting January 2015. This will allow residents to move into new homes in Regent Park as quickly as possible.
In Phase Three, Toronto Community Housing will build 614 rent-geared-to-income units and approximately 50 new affordable rental units. Its development partner, The Daniels Corporation, will build six new market condominium buildings.
