Rev. Jan Rothenburger

revRev. Jan Rothenburger does work few people would relish. And she loves it.

As the Community Outreach Pastor at The Yonge Street Mission, she spends her days supporting homeless women and sex workers. Some of these women are in jail, where she attends five or six times a week.
“You see the beauty in every individual,” she says. “It’s a blessing to get to know each person.”
Jan has been a blessing in the lives of many. Now, she has been thanked in a unique way: she has won a free year of rent Hollyburn Properties. As part of its charitable work, the company held a contest late last year to honour an individual who makes significant contributions to his or her community.
“Jan’s life is devoted to serving those in need, mostly women and youth who are street and prison involved, many struggling with addictions – people society would rather not think about.” said her neighbour and friend Agnes, who nominated her for the award. “She works long, hard hours serving, helping, trying to save them from the degrading and humiliating situations in which life has them trapped.”
Hollyburn Property’s spokesperson Katrina May sums it up succinctly: “It’s not every day you get the chance to meet someone who makes you stop in your tracks and think about your purpose.”
